A prominent landmark of the Sydney skyline is the renowned Sydney Opera House which was built in 1973, with its unusual design the brainchild of Danish architect Jørn Utzon. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year in October, the Sydney Opera House is holding a special Anniversary Concert in October at one of its seven performance areas.
Next to this historic performing arts site stands the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a striking landmark that connects the city’s central business district and the North Shore. Taking six years in total to construct, the bridge has been a photo opportunity for tourists as well as acting as a component part of the daily commute ever since. Opened in 1932 by Labor Premier of New South Wales Jack Lang, the bridge covers 503 metres, including the approach, and is used by hundreds of thousands of vehicles per day.
When the city lifestyle gets too hectic, many head down to the famous Bondi Beach, which is situated just four miles from the CBD. Popular with surfers and families, the beach also plays host to a number of events including the Surf Fun Run, the longest running event of its kind in the world, where Bondi acts as the finish line. Those scared of Australia’s shark reputation can also rest easy knowing no one has perished from a shark attack in the area since 1937, thanks to the shark nets that surround the bay. With a long history which includes everything from the stories of bathing convicts in the 1800s to the heroic acts of lifeguards today, Bondi Beach is a must for anyone touring Sydney.
