Without a doubt one of Sydney’s best hot spots is Darling Harbour. It is easily accessible from Sydney’s CBD using the monorail that runs around the city or the light train system. For those who are feeling a little more energetic it is a short walk (about 15 minutes from the centre of Sydney). Darling Harbour offers both a fantastic range day and night attractions which makes it one of Sydney’s best tourist locations.
With the number of attractions in the area you will want to spend a day or two exploring them. We found a great range accommodation like The Ibis Hotel Sydney in Darling Harbour. Making this our base made it easy to explore the whole of Sydney. We feel it was a better alternative to staying in a hotel in the CBD.
So what are the ‘not to be missed’ attractions in Darling Harbour? Well, by day you should most definitely visit the Sydney Aquarium. This is a huge aquarium, and to really make the most of it you should spend at least several hours. You will find numerous things to see here with the main focus being on the waters of Australia. Our favourite attractions included the Great Barrier Reef – the largest exhibit of its kind on the planet! Plus you’ll be treated to penguin exhibits, seals, sharks and much more!
Once you have finished exploring the undersea world in the Aquarium, it is time to explore Sydney Harbour from the water. There are a variety of good harbour cruise companies that sail from Darling Harbour offering both night and day cruise around Sydney Harbour. To make more of an even of it, an excellent idea is Sydney Show Boats offering dinner, entertainment and a night time harbour cruise are rolled into one.
Situated right next door to the Aquarium, is the fascinating world of Sydney Wildlife World. Here you can experience most of Australia’s wildlife within the multiple habitats created in this inner city animal park. These include an amazing butterflies enclosure, a popular koala sanctuary, nocturnal creatures and a rainforest.
Other daytime attractions include several museums – the Australian National Maritime Museum provides visitors with an interesting insight into Australia’s maritime history and the technology used through the years, whilst the Powerhouse Museum is a more general look at history, science, technology, space exploration and more.
Sydney’s IMAX Cinema is in Darling Harbour too. As with most of the IMAX cinemas around the world, you can see both the latest popular box office blockbusters and many fascinating documentary feature films If you’ve never seen a movie on an IMAX screen before, you should visit the IMAX at Darling Harbour as this is an experience not to be missed!
We thought Darling Harbour was popular during the day, but by night it becomes much more so, particularly on weekend evenings. There are several evening attractions at Darling Harbour – you’ll be able to enjoy a great meal in one of the many restaurants, go dancing at a club, go gambling at Star City Casino or watch a live show at the Entertainment Centre.
