If you have ever read any of my articles about how to build your downline faster in an MLM business, then you know that I preach over and over again that traditional marketing techniques do not work. In this article I am not going to go into detail telling you that they don’t work, but instead I am going to explain WHY they don’t work.
Before I go further and explain why traditional marketing techniques will not help you build your downline, and to be sure we’re on the same page, let me define what I mean when I use the term “traditional marketing techniques.”
Most network marketing companies teach their associates to build their downline by tapping into their “warm market” (aka chasing friends, family, neighbors and co-workers and begging them to join the business). They also teach their associates to lead with the business opportunity associated that the company offers instead of leading with the product when approaching prospects.
If you want to build your downline (or build your downline faster), this is not an effective marketing strategy. The question I want to answer in this article is… WHY?
First of all, even if this technique works at all, it will never help you build a downline quickly. If your goal is to build your downline faster than you have been, then this “warm market” strategy is about the worst one around. By definition you are only able to approach (even if we assume approaching prospects was the right way to go) no more than a few prospects at any one time. This is wildly inefficient, and you will never build your downline faster this way.
Second, and the main reason this kind of marketing technique will not build your downline faster (or build it much at all), is that it puts you in a position where you will have no authority or expertise in the minds of your prospects. This is the key to successfully marketing any network marketing company.
When you position yourself as an expert in your niche area in the minds of your prospects, they will develop a trust and a respect level with you. When you position yourself as having the solution to a problem they are having or the answer they are looking for to something, that is when prospects will chase you (and you will become the hunted instead of the hunter). This is the key to building your downline faster.
There is a big difference between attracting prospects this way when you’ve already created a relationship with them via the Internet, versus the technique of chasing after prospects and twisting their arm to get them to sign up for the business opportunity. It is the difference between building your downline faster and building your downline at a snail’s pace (if at all).
