In what has been a positive development for the local economy and the Brisbane labour hire scene, Brisbane is amassing quite a collection of tall office buildings. In the last few years, the 200 metre threshold has been breached four times.
In 2005, the Riparian Plaza building became the first in Brisbane to reach the 200-metre mark. Located at 71 Eagle Street in the Brisbane CBD, the 53 storey mixed-use building was erected on the last available waterfront parcel of land in the city. Measuring 200 metres to the top of the building, Riparian Plaza tops out at 250 metres if its 50-metre tall communications mast is included.
The Aurora Tower took over the top spot in 2006 at a height of 207 metres. The construction phase led to a spike in Brisbane construction recruitment and the building was noted for its technological innovations. Specifically, Aurora Tower was designed to use iris recognition technology for security purposes.
It was not until 2011, however, that Aurora Tower was dethroned as Brisbane’s tallest building with the arrival of the Meriton building, Soleil. Located at 495 Adelaide Street, Soleil reaches 243 metres into the blue Queensland sky.
The flurry of tall building construction continues with another Meriton building, Infinity Tower, set to become the city’s highest when complete at 262 metres tall.
And two days ago the Brisbane Times reported that a DA had been lodged for an 82 storey, 274-metre tall apartment building to be built on George Street on the North Quay side of the old Supreme and District Court site on George Street.
The 300 George Street development-not to be confused with Sydney’s building of the same name-will feature an office tower, residential apartments and a hotel over three separate buildings.
The development application was lodged with the Brisbane City Council by the Shayer Group, part of the Taiwan-based conglomerate Par Jar Group, and includes the following:
• An 82-storey residential tower on the corner of North Quay and Adelaide Street;
• A 32-storey, five-star hotel on the corner of Ann Street and North Quay, and;
• A 39-storey office tower on the corner of George and Ann streets.
The Shayer Group is proposing that a retail mall, master ballroom and conference facilities occupy the three floors of the building. The proposal also provides for a Brisbane River viewing platform and an “entrance statement” that will greet visitors and passersby at the corner of Adelaide and George Streets.
300 George Street is an ambitious project. If given the green light by the Council’s planning teams, the project will be welcomed by the Queensland contract labour sector.
Demolition works are expected to commence in early 2014 if everything goes to plan with construction set to begin in earnest the following year.
