Call of Duty is virtually always the name that comes to mind when people think of first-person shooter (FPS) games. COD has been a dominant force in console FPS gaming, for better or ill. The gaming community was shocked when DICE (EA Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment) stated they were working on Battlefield 3 in February 2011. They were launching a direct sequel to Battlefield 2, one of the best first-person shooter games ever, for the first time since 2005. In addition to being widely anticipated, Battlefield 3 was also releasing one week before Modern Warfare 3. It swiftly devolved into a battle for FPS supremacy between Battlefield and Call of Duty. This became a subliminal warning to Infinity Ward that their four-year throne as monarchs of first-person shooter games was under threat and might be ending. Did Battlefield 3 dethrone Call of Duty as the king of console FPS games now that both games have been available for almost a year and all the excitement has subsided? Graphics, audio, and environment
The setting of Battlefield 3 is the near future. The game has a single person campaign mode but is primarily a multiplayer game. You command a variety of military actions in the single campaign, including a force recon marine, a Russian special operations officer, an F-18 fighter pilot, and an M1A2 tank operator. Battlefield 3’s narrative is unexpectedly compelling and fascinating. There are numerous flips and twists as you read the novel. The story’s principal themes centre on an impending conflict in 2014 that will involve both France and Iran. In Battlefield 3, the combat and the narrative are well-integrated. Battlefield 3’s single player campaign is strong overall.
Although the plot is compelling, many individuals have serious concerns about the graphics. The graphics in Battlefield 3 looked incredible when DICE showed it off at gaming events. The video of the tank with the Karkland dunes was really amazing. No other game before this one had this degree of detail.
All of that video, though, was pre-rendered, so it was anticipated to look good. Was BF3 able to maintain the same level of intensity and rich realism in its graphics when placed in a real-time environment with hundreds of shifting variables? It most certainly did. Simply said, Battlefield 3 is a gorgeous game. DICE spent $100 million on marketing it, making it clear that they intended to showcase a creation of which they are proud. New character animation technology dubbed ANT and the Frostbite 2 engine were used to create the graphics for Battlefield 3. The frostbite engine enables the game to create enormous details, dynamic shadows, and clean textures across a vast world while keeping everything destructible. The ANT character animation is amazing; every soldier is highly realistic and changes face expressions as the combat intensifies.
Iran, New York, and Paris are just a few of the many locations included in Battlefield 3’s single-player campaign. The majority of the regions are metropolitan with lots of structures, and DICE did an excellent job of adding distinct detail to each one. The colours are quite brilliant, and the scenery in Battlefield 3 is very far away.
The multiplayer maps include some stunning visuals as well. Without adding the downloadable DLC, there are 9 main maps. These maps include the Tehran Highway, Caspian Boarder, Damavand Peak, Grand Bazaar, Kharg Island, Noshahr Canals, Operation Firestorm, and Operation Metro. These maps each have distinctive features and styles. Each map’s multiplayer experience has been brilliantly differentiated by DICE. A very vast, forested map is called the Caspian Boarder. It is great for sniping and employing vehicles, has houses and woodlands, and both. The market area where Damavand Peak is located is dark and wet. Kharg Island is situated on a rocky island and is encircled by water. Noshahr Canals is a game where you fight in several canals that are located in an industrial neighbourhood.
Seine Crossing is a colourful map with a Parisian focus. The final main map, Tehran Highway, focuses on a nighttime urban region in Iran. Battlefield 3 has great graphics throughout, from the single-player campaign to the varied multiplayer maps. Each map has a lot of graphic variety.
Battlefield 3 has some of the highest-quality audio I’ve ever heard in a video game. When you are proficient enough, you can identify where each bullet came from as it whizzes by. Each gunshot sounds sharp and lifelike. The sound effects for the tanks, jets, and other vehicles are incredibly lifelike. It truly feels like you are a part of the action thanks to the excellent voice acting. Johan Skugge and Jukka Rintamki also created a 19-track official music for the game. Battlefield 3’s audio is outstanding. Battlefield 3 has great graphics throughout, from the single-player campaign to the varied multiplayer map. Each level has a lot of graphic variety.

Gameplay and controls:
Battlefield 3’s controls are typical first-person shooter controls. Although they can be altered, the default configuration uses the left analogue stick’s L1 and R1 buttons to aim and fire respectively. You may adjust the camera’s position with the right analogue stick. You can run by pressing the analogue stick while holding it down. You can switch between guns by pressing the triangle button. You can interact with environment elements by pressing the circle button. You can reload or pick up weapons by pressing the square button. Your available technologies can be changed with the right and left diagonal buttons, the up button to activate the laser sight, and the down button to select between automatic and burst fire fire modes. You can quickly throw a knife by pressing the R2 button, and a frag grenade by using the L2 button. The controls are simple to understand yet challenging to master. It can be challenging to understand the controls for operating a tank or a jet at first, but there is only a slight learning curve. Overall, Battlefield 3’s controls are excellent.
While the compelling tale, excellent sound design, and stunning graphics all contribute to the strength of the game. The most crucial aspect of games is far more significant than any of these elements. The core of every game is its gameplay. It was a brave challenge for DICE to design gameplay that would be quick, thrilling, and intense enough to dethrone Call of Duty as the console gaming king. While the DICE team excelled in many areas, there were also numerous areas where they fell short.
Using the Frostbite 2 engine is Battlefield 3. Real-time radiosity, complex physics, and completely destructible environments are all supported by this engine. All of these factors essentially imply that Battlefield 3’s physics and graphics substantially outperform virtually every game that came before it. Bullets can easily pass through walls, a tank can smash a hole in a building’s front wall, and a grenade’s explosion can send debris flying everywhere. One of the most realistic FPS games available is Battlefield 3. The frostbite 2 engine simplifies all the possible outcomes and makes the game playable by producing textures quickly. As a result, there is no lag in the thrill and action. Battlefield 3 has three different gameplay modes: a single-player story, a co-op mode, and a multiplayer option.
Although the single-player campaign looks fantastic and features a wide variety of settings, it can become a little monotonous. The truth is that Battlefield 3’s primary gameplay element is multiplayer. Before playing online or in co-op, the single-player campaign is a good way to get the gist of things, but it doesn’t really lend itself to replayability. Additionally, the Battlefield 2 offline map mode, which allows for bot play, would have been good to see. Battlefield 3 does not, however, provide this.
You can cooperate with another online player to finish 6 tasks in the co-op mode. Each mission has a different set of goals that you and your buddy must accomplish. Split-screen co-op is a great way to play co-op with a friend, but Battlefield 3 doesn’t support it. If you have friends around, this can be incredibly annoying because you can only play together if you have two PlayStation 3s.
The game’s biggest draw is its multiplayer feature. Six multiplayer game modes are available in Battlefield 3: Squad rush, Conquest, Team deathmatch, and Squad deathmatch. Each multiplayer game mode has a unique goal, and playing them all provides a unique multiplayer experience. While some game settings favour teamwork precisely, others allow for every man for himself. The Conquest gamemode in Battlefield 3 is the standard gamemode in which two teams battle it out for control of numerous bases on a sizable map. Vehicle warfare and collaboration are best suited for this game mode. Conquest continues to be the finest game mode, in my opinion. You may earn points in a variety of ways, and it’s thrilling.
There are two teams in Rush. While the other team guards the M-COM station, one team attempts to attack and destroy it. Although it takes place in a smaller space, Squad Rush is fundamentally the same. Another traditional option is team deathmatch, in which your 12-person team competes against another 12-person team. Basically, the goal is to eliminate as many enemies as you can and obtain a predetermined number of team kills. This game mode is all about shooting as many people as you can while running around without any vehicles. Similar to Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch pits four teams of four players against one another in an effort to attain a predetermined number of kills rather than two teams of twelve. Two 8-person teams are engaged in close combat in Conquest Domination. With the exception of being more constrained and requiring more tactical forethought while attacking a base, it is identical to Conquest and is basically the same.
There are 4 classes available when you choose a gamemode.
There is the Assault class, which consists of both infantrymen and medical personnel. By choosing Assault, you can restore fallen allies and rack up kills. The Engineer class has the ability to destroy other vehicles with rocket launchers and repair vehicles. The Support class carries powerful weapons that can kill a lot of foes and supplies others with ammunition. The last and most important class is Recon, and they are the game’s snipers. Recon is helpful for eliminating adversaries at a distance.
Teamwork and squads are heavily emphasised in Battlefield 3. Each class has significant advantages and disadvantages, and being able to make use of each is crucial for success. You are assigned to a squad when you first sign up for a conquest game or any other game style. Battlefield 3 differs from other first-person shooter games in that it requires players to devise strategies and pick the appropriate classes for various scenarios. Battlefield 3 has in-game chat and VOIP capabilities, allowing you to speak with your squad members while wearing a headset. If you play Battlefield 3 alone, it’s a good game, but with buddies, it’s easily one of the best games ever created. In this game, cooperation is key.
The maps in this game are one issue. The same extremely detailed maps can grow tiresome due to their size. Without engaging in fight, you can go for minutes; but, health is also quickly depleted. When you initially begin this game, dying is quite simple. All the downloaded content is a significant additional issue. Although you’re not required to purchase DLC, the game does seem lacking without all the areas and goodies. Battlefield 3’s $60 price tag might go to $125 with the DLC. The fact that BF3 necessitates an internet pass is a major issue. Used games lack an internet pass, but new games do. A new online pass costs $10 and can only be purchased once. Although this was done to increase sales, it actually devalues Battlefield 3 when it comes time to sell it.

Does this game merit purchase? Final Reflections:
A number of aspects about Battlefield 3 are excellent, including the graphics, the audio, and the multiplayer, which is both engaging and diverse. It also falls short in a lot of other areas, though. The lack of split-screen co-op, single-player campaign replayability, offline maps, pricey DLC, and boring gameplay after a while all leave a lot to be desired. Battlefield 3 is ultimately not the ground-breaking game that it was initially lauded as being during the first few minutes of gameplay. But it’s also not a horrible game in any way. You are receiving a first-person shooter that is reliable and expertly produced when you purchase Battlefield 3. In terms of FPS, it is comparable to Call of Duty, but the squad-based gameplay, vehicles, and expansive maps make it a totally different game. Battlefield 3 is one of those games that you can find yourself returning to time and time again, thus I would strongly recommend purchasing it. Battlefield 3 is a good game that PlayStation 3 users should definitely get. A 9 out of 10 for me.
