Situated in the North Island of New Zealand, Auckland city is a great place to visit. It is a medium-sized city of 1.5 million people and has won various awards as being among the top ten `most-liveable cities in the world.’
In terms of its natural beauty, for the tourist, Auckland has it all… positioned between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea, it has two beautiful harbours – the Hauraki Gulf on the east and the Manukau harbour on the west.
Auckland has a naturally undulating contour, and so everywhere you drive as a tourist, you are rewarded by wonderful panoramas that usually include a sea vista. In fact, even more than that, Auckland has a number of extinct volcanic cones that you are able to drive to the top of, that provide you with views of the whole city.
Because of its coastal nature, Auckland has some wonderful beaches that enable you to swim from December through to April. In addition, you can catch a ferry that can take you on a 30 – 40 minute boat trip to any one of a number of islands dotted around the Hauraki Gulf, one of which is Waiheke Island. You will be able to view the many sailing boats of every different description – it’s no wonder that Auckland is called the `city of sails’ and is now becoming known as the boat-building capital of the world (recent successes in the America’s Cup has shown that).
Auckland also has many recreational parks and reserves for you to enjoy as a tourist, such as Cornwall Park in the middle of the city – a 300 acre farm-park that is a pleasure to picnic or walk in, and if you climb to the top of One Tree Hill, you will be rewarded with a great view of the Hauraki Gulf.
In addition to this, as a tourist, there are a number of coastal reserves for you to visit, such as Wenderholm, Army Bay on the Whangaporoa Peninsula, Long Bay, Omana at Maraeti and Duders Reserve at Whitford. These are very popular for families – a great place to escape from the city. Then there is the Waitakare Range, a large area of native bush on the western side of the city that is great if you are into tramping.
Auckland also offers a wide range of activities for the tourist such as a climb to the top of the 328 meter high Sky Tower, and if you are brave, you can even do a bungy-jump from it. Then there is the Auckland Harbour Bridge climb where you get to walk over the bridge’s super-structure. Along the Auckland waterfront, Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium is certainly worth a visit, as is an opportunity to hire sea kayaks from nearby Ferg’s Kayaks and go for a twilight paddle as part of a group, to Rangitoto Island.
The main shopping areas are Queen Street in the CBD, but Newmarket and Parnell are up-market shopping precincts that also especially cater for the female tourist tastes.
What about the people of Auckland – as a tourist you will be struck by how multicultural Auckland city has become, and so this makes Auckland a bit of a `Foodies Paradise’ with delicious dishes from dozens of different cultures. The Viaduct Harbour area is a great place to find a restaurant, where you can dine t in the ambient atmosphere alongside the super yachts berthed at the adjoining marina. It is very short walk from the center of the city, and affords a great night out for you after a fun-filled day enjoying the sights and tourist attractions of Auckland.
