Have you then clicked on a link or an advertisement to be taken to another page or website to gain further information about that service or product? If you have, you probably helped someone make money and did not even know it. It’s called Internet marketing, or affiliate marketing. Probably the best thing about marketing on the internet is that anyone can do it. That means that anyone can be online, and making money. The concept of affiliate marketing is rather simple. A company offers payment to a website owner to drive traffic to their goods. When a person visits the website owner’s site, and clicks on the link or advertisement to be taken to the company’s goods or services, the website owner earns a commission from the company for that forwarded traffic.
When making money as an affiliate, it’s basic revenue sharing. It is a means of advertisement and companies expect to pay for advertising. Revenue sharing, itself, has been around long before the Internet even came to be. It was in 1994 that affiliate marketing became a profitable option for website owners, and that is four years after the Internet was “born”.
There are different ways that Internet marketing pays website owners for their participation in affiliate marketing. It is said that in early affiliate marketing, an adult industry website was amongst the first, if not the first to utilize a cost per click option. This method means that for every person who clicks on an advertisement for a company, the company pays the website owner a set amount for forwarding that person to their website. However, this method only accounts for one percent of compensation methods available with affiliate marketing.
The most predominant compensation for marketers is revenue sharing or cost per sale. It accounts for 80 percent of marketing compensation. Website owners are paid by companies for sending traffic to their sites and it is based upon a percentage of sales that result from that forwarded traffic. Getting involved in affiliate marketing is rather simple. There are program directories available online which can direct a website owner to companies needing advertising. Should all else fail, it never hurts to contact the company you wish to advertise for directly. Being proactive, and keeping advertising fresh can lead to a lucrative affiliate marketing business.
