Advanced Internet marketing is not for everyone, but if you’re an entrepreneur looking to expand your reach on the Web, you’ll need to explore email campaigns, webinars or live online events.
As an entrepreneur, you’re most likely a self-starter. As the decision maker for your business, you’re used to being in control at all times. But there’s not enough time in your schedule to take care of all aspects of your business. And just as you delegate to a secretary to answer the phones and file paperwork, you must also let go a little to achieve your goals.
If this is difficult for you to do, you’re not alone. As a project manager, one of the pitfalls I see our clients struggle with is this concept of loosening their grip on the creative process. There are a few setbacks that come with being too controlling:
1. You don’t get the best your web designer or marketing team has to offer: When you don’t listen to the advice of experienced designers or marketers, you are missing opportunities to more effectively promote your business. Being too set on having a newsletter designed in a highly specific manner that requires excessive time or ignoring suggestions for advanced Internet marketing plans can hinder your success.
2. You limit creativity when you are too rigid: When you dictate every detail, you are preventing a web designer’s true talent from coming through. My suggestion: Tell your designer what colors and styles you like; provide a website or two that you like so they have an idea of what you’re looking for. Then get out of the way. When you get so detailed that you must pick out the exact color for a website, down to the RGB or CMYK color code, you are only bogging down the process. And how knows what gem they might have created with a little more flexibility?
3. You slow everything down because you can’t let go: When you have to oversee every detail of your advanced marketing plan, you are bound to get behind. After all, you have a business to run, too. It can be difficult to keep up with your daily demands and control your online presence in detail. It’s important that you build a trusting relationship with those who work with you. It does not come immediately, but give your website team a little room to meet your goals and build that trust.
4. Don’t be such a perfectionist: Try to keep in mind investment vs. return. If you are designing a free offer on your site, for example, you don’t want to invest hundreds of dollars in multiple revisions. It’s a free gift, after all! It’s OK to have standards and to try to meet them – your web/marketing team will learn what they are and learn to hit closer to the mark each time you give them a project. However, if you let yourself get too wrapped up in making a project perfect in every way, you will end up exceeding your budget and missing your deadlines. Neither is good for business.
It can be difficult to let go of that control when you’re used to getting things done on your own. But if you give your advanced Internet marketing team just enough guidance to set them down the right path, and a little flexibility to be creative, you will see the best results – and for a much smaller investment.
