There is a lot of advice out there about what things should be part of an MLM marketing system. A few of these pieces of advice have become so pervasive that they are accepted as being good and effective ways to build a business… BUT unfortunately they do not work.
So here are a few things you may have heard that you should have as part of your MLM marketing system, that I would suggest you either keep to a minimum or don’t do at all.
1. Buying All Your Leads: There are people out there who will tell you that it is best (and most efficient or most effective) to just pay for all of your leads, as opposed to generating leads yourself. While purchasing leads can be a component of an MLM marketing system, it should not be the primary way you generate leads. Your best strategy is to build your own list of prospects. For one, it is good to know HOW to do it. Also, the quality of lead you get when you buy them can be very poor. You virtually always get better, more targeted leads when you generate them yourself.
2. “Setting And Forgetting”: Another trap that people fall into when designing their MLM marketing system is to believe that their relationship with each person they bring into the business ends once they are signed up. This is a terrible marketing strategy. You want to communicate with those prospects and create a relationship with them. You want to share meaningful content with them that HELPS them overcome a problem they’re experiencing. A smart marketer — and any good MLM marketing system — takes into consideration the lifetime value of each prospect.
3. Deferring To Your Upline: Has anyone from your upline ever offered to “help” you by getting on a three-way call with your prospects or by closing your prospects for you? Allowing this is a big mistake. Perhaps the most important cornerstone of any good MLM marketing system is establishing YOURSELF as an expert in your niche and building trust. People buy both from experts and folks they trust (this should be YOU).
4. Having No Funnel In Place: The other big mistake that too many marketers make is to take a random approach to marketing their MLM business — meaning that you do a bunch of “stuff,” but don’t have a very deliberate plan in place. You also want to be sure that have a plan for your prospects once they are on your list. You don’t want to get their information or sign them up into your business and then… do nothing. Create a marketing funnel for your prospects to ensure that whether they sign up with your xyz business or not, you’re still making money (this is really key).
