You can sell digital products as an affiliate
You can sell physical products and get a commission i.e. drop shipping. You will sign up for a program where the merchant will do the selling and customer support. Examples are books, clothing, televisions, computers etc.
In some cases you can also make money by gathering leads for other companies. All you have to do is to have people leave their email addresses when they come to your website. It is not rare for companies to pay substantial amounts per lead. These companies know the total value of a buying customer.
In all these cases all the affiliate does is to send people to the sales page of the merchant and collect a commission.
When learning affiliate marketing you can even start out without having your own website. You can send people directly to the merchant site. This might not be an option for anyone looking to do affiliate marketing on the long term though.
Having your own website might not be enough to generate sales as an affiliate marketer, any website without substantial traffic will not generate sales. Learning affiliate marketing will require you to become familiar the different strategies of generating traffic to the sales page.
It is quite important to implement different strategies here. Do not rely on one only. For a while, and of course it is still a viable strategy, pay per click was a strategy used by many affiliates to drive traffic their sales pages. Pay per click is becoming more and more expensive though.
Google has shut down many accounts of affiliates in past as they are constantly improving on the user experience. For some affiliates relying solely on pay per click traffic saw their business disappear overnight. There are other forms of paid traffic like banner ads etc. which I will not discuss here.
The trend is now moving towards organic traffic, in other words through natural searches via the search engines. Unlike the pay per click models where you could literally generate traffic within minutes this is definitely a more long term strategy.
