When it comes to marketing, a lot of people, particularly those who own and run businesses of all types and sizes, believe that it’s an activity that necessitates doing things that they don’t really want to do. Marketing is sometimes seen as an arduous and annoying endeavour, one that calls for you to perform moves that may be too difficult, or go against your principles and beliefs. Of course, that may be true, but really, marketing is what you want it to be. A marketing plan that goes along with your business mindset can be created. A plan can easily be tailored to your interests, preferences, skills and ideas. You don’t have to go out of your way to market the business you know.
Create a plan based on activities you’re actually interested in
You would have heard it from the best business gurus: build a business on something you’re passionate about. The same principle applies to marketing. You can easily build a plan based on activities you actually want to engage in, on a regular basis. Don’t like calling up people randomly? Then don’t include it in your plan. Just because other marketers are doing this or that, doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Marketing shouldn’t be about doing things because you have to. Instead, it should be something you actually want to do. False expectations are dangerous for just about anyone’s marketing efforts; so relax, loosen up and stick to a plan that’s easier for everyone involved.
Don’t jump in bandwagons (at least not those you’re not interested in)
Just because everyone else in the industry is doing it, doesn’t mean you have to engage in a specific activity to market your company. New methods of marketing which are hyped to yield results can be tempting to get into, even if you don’t know a thing about them. For example, if you’ve heard about social media marketing, but have never been interested in social networks like Facebook, you don’t really have to go out of your way just to join the fun. Of course, there’s no harm in trying; but if you’re not interested, by no means, don’t pressure yourself.
Engaging in marketing activities against your wishes is detrimental
Trust me, when you’re miserable, your potential clients will know it; forcing a marketing plan on yourself, and your team for that matter, will only be counter-productive towards your efforts to success. You’re only setting yourself up to fail by going against what you’re interested in.
Keep it simple by concentrating on an activity you’re skilled at
Believe it or not, a marketing plan that concentrates on a single particular activity can be just as effective as a plan that covers multiple factors and strategies. Because your plan follows an activity you’re skilled at, you can work on it consistently, ensuring results borne from your hard work. Again, stick to your strengths. If you’re internet savvy, then build an online marketing strategy.
